How to find us

Mainstream school transport

How do I apply for free school transport?

There is no formal application process for school transport. Details of pupils attending each school are provided to the Transport department, who will contact you if your child is eligible for free school transport.

What if my address changes?

You need to notify the school who will inform the Home to School Transport Section. If you still qualify under the current eligibility criteria, your child will be issued with the appropriate pass for your new address.

What if after moving my child no longer lives in the catchment area of their current school?

Unless your child is in years 10 or 11 you will no longer qualify for school transport.

How does parental preference of a school affect entitlement to free school transport?

If you choose to place your child in a school other than the nearest suitable or catchment school, then school transport will not be provided.

How can I find out information about school bus times and pick up points?

Click here for details of all school transport bus routes.

Drop-off times are not published, but estimated times for your child's route can be obtained from the bus operator directly.

For details of commercial routes that are available for pupils who are not entitled to free school transport, visit the Traveline Cymru website.

Is school transport provided from home to school?

No - With the exception of some taxis and some minibuses, pupils are required to walk to their designated bus stops.

How long should my child wait for school transport?

Pupils are advised to be at their designated bus stop 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time. If the bus fails to arrive after 20 minutes, the pupil should follow the guidance notes on the reverse of their bus pass, ring the number printed and wait for instructions from the Home to School Transport Section.

Can my child be transported to any other address other than the home address?

No – unless it has been agreed by the Education or Home to School Transport Section, school transport will drop pupils back to their designated bus stop. No other address or drop off point will be authorised or sanctioned by the bus driver.

Can my child use a different service to the one that has been allocated?

No – each school route has an individual contract number and only pupils issued with a pass for that route may travel. Any child attempting to board the wrong bus will be turned away by the driver.

Do I need to be available to meet the contract bus both mornings and afternoons?

Parents and carers of primary school children are required to make arrangements to ensure that their child gets on and off school transport safely. A responsible adult must be available at least 10 minutes prior to the agreed pick-up times as detailed on the school bus timetable.

What will happen if my child is not met by a responsible adult?

Should a responsible adult not be at the stop to meet the child, the child will remain on the bus while it completes its route, before returning to the child’s designated stop. If the responsible adult is still not there to meet them, the child will be taken to the nearest police station.

Parents and carers who persistently fail to collect their child risk having their access to free school transport withdrawn.

Parents and carers should note that: transport providers are not permitted, under any circumstances, to accept written or verbal instructions from a parent or carer, for their child to be picked up or dropped off from their designated bus stop without a responsible adult being present.
