Commercial Practices – Food and agricultural standards
Food and agricultural standards
The Trading Standards Service is responsible for the enforcement of food standards legislation at retail, manufacturing, wholesale and distribution premises in the county borough.
Food Standards legislation relates to the composition, labelling and description applied to food.
Premises are inspected to ensure that food on sale or for supply is correctly labelled, complies with compositional standards and not offered for sale beyond ‘use by dates’.
Samples of food are purchased and submitted to the public analyst for testing to ensure they meet compositional standards, e.g. meat content of pies and pasties, alcohol content of spirits.
Food production starts at the farm and food standards enforcement includes the description, composition and labelling of fertilisers and animal feeding stuffs, which are regarded as part of the food production process.
