Dog warden service

Bridgend County Borough Council operates a Dog Warden Service from within the Public Protection Department.

The Dog Warden is responsible for the enforcement of a wide range of legislation that relates to dogs and educating dog owners to promote responsible dog ownership.

The Dog Warden patrols the county borough for stray dogs and responds to complaints from residents of the county borough concerning strays, dangerous dogs and barking dogs. There is a legal obligation for a dog owner not to let their dogs stray on the streets and for dogs to wear a collar with the owner’s name and address.

Stray dogs wearing collars will in the first instance be returned to their owners and the owner advised to keep their dogs under control. Dogs who are found repeatedly roaming the streets or dogs without collars will be seized and placed in kennels. The dogs are held at the kennels for a period of seven days to enable them to be claimed by their owners. The owners are required to pay a fee for the return of their dogs to cover the expense of seizing the dogs and the cost of keeping them in the kennel. If after seven days the dogs have not been claimed, the dogs will be rehomed either by the kennel or a dog re-homing agency.

The dog warden is also involved in promoting responsible dog ownership and works with a number of agencies, including the Dogs’ Trust and the RSPCA to provide guidance and assistance to dog owners. The service also encourages responsible dog owners to have their dogs micro-chipped, which enables the dog warden to refer to a national database and identify the owners of the dogs should the dog be lost or have strayed.
