What is Supporting People?
Supporting People is a government funded programme for delivering housing related support services to vulnerable people aged 16 years and upwards who live in the community.
It funds housing related support for a range of esupported accommodation for vulnerable people to provide a better quality of life and help them to live independently. It includes funding for schemes such as hostels, refuges, temporary accommodation and for groups such as young people, the homeless and ex-offenders. It also funds the housing related support within group homes and retirement/sheltered accommodation for older people and people with learning disabilities. Other support can be for people in their own homes, such as floating support. Some examples of the type of support funded by the Supporting People programme include:
- Help with money matters and claiming benefits
- Form filling
- Emotional support
- Life skills support
- Help to access education, training or work
- Help with compliance with a tenancy
- Feeling and being safe
- Managing relationships
Overall, it enables a wide range of vulnerable people to maintain stable and independent lives in the community. Support varies in its range and intensity, according to the service type and the needs of each individual.
Supporting People does not pay for personal or health care. These are funded through other bodies, for example, Social Services should be funding any social care such as helping people to take medication or with intimate care tasks.
