Risk Assessments

Under the Civil Contingencies Act, Category One responders have a duty to assess the risk of emergencies occurring within or affecting upon their geographical area. In accordance with the Act, this means identifying hazards that if they were to impact a community the effect of the incident would be so great that Category One responders would find it extremely difficult to continue their normal roles.

The South Wales Local Resilience Forum (SWLRF) has developed a Community Risk Register which identifies significant hazards in South Wales and assesses how likely each hazard is to occur at a given scale. This assessment gives each hazard a risk rating so it is identify to see hazards with low, medium, high or very high risks.

The whole process helps Category One and Two responders determine if any actions are required to reduce the risk posed by the hazards and helps inform emergency planning processes. Use this link to view the South Wales Community Risk Register.

Following on from the South Wales LRF Community Risk Register the Council has developed a County Borough Community Risk Register. The document follows national guidance on how risks should be assessed and notes the work completed by the SWLRF Risk group but provides examples of potential hazards and risk in Bridgend. Where appropriate, hazards are also scaled down to fit the context of the County Borough.
