Catering Services - School Meals
Bridgend County Borough Council are very proud of our school meals service.
It is our aim to ensure that all pupils can be provided with a healthy, nutritious meal and that vegetarians and those on special diets are also catered for. Our meals are freshly prepared daily, taste great and are terrific value for money!

PRIMARY SCHOOL MENUS
Our primary menus have been analysed and are fully compliant with the Welsh Government’s Healthy Eating in Schools (Nutritional Standards and Requirements) (Wales) Regulations.
For just £2.10 per day, primary pupils receive a main meal, dessert and a cold drink of semi-skimmed milk or water.
In the majority of primary schools, pupils can choose from two tasty hot meal options as well as selecting from our salad selections. Nursery pupils are served a single menu which is indicated on the menu by an asterix*.
Our menu is run on a 3-week rotational cycle ensuring variety and choice with a strong focus on fresh fruit, vegetables and salads. Our commitment to healthy eating is reflected in the products we use, with most containing reduced saturated fat, sugar and salt. Good practice ensures all foods are oven baked or steamed, except chips which are served only once a week on a Friday. Also available daily; fresh fruit, wholemeal bread, yoghurt, cheese & biscuits, ice cream, semi-skimmed milk and water.

A number of primary schools operate a cashless catering system, giving parents the ability to pay online via the Bridgend County Borough Council’s ‘Pay It’ link.
SECONDARY/COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL MENUS
Comprehensive school meals are served in a cash cafeteria service named 'Trackers'. There are three food areas or ‘tracks’ to choose lunch from each offering excellent value for money. Our Comprehensive menus have been analysed and are fully compliant with the Welsh Government's Healthy Eating in Schools (Nutritional Standards and Requirements) (Wales) Regulations.
This food area serves the main meals of the day. The menu changes on a three week rotational cycle (just like in primary school) and includes a vegetarian option. Favourites such as traditional Roast Days with Yorkshire puddings and rich gravy are served as well as dishes with an international theme like Chicken Tikka. The main meal is served with pasta, rice or choice of potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Chips are only on offer on a Friday in all secondary schools.
This area serves fresh, healthy foods like salads, pasta pots, sandwiches, hot or cold baguettes, tortilla wraps, jacket potatoes, fresh fruit and yoghurt, all prepared daily.
Our swift service for students on the go!
It’s the best place to visit for quick, hot, nutritious food at lunchtime if pupils don’t have the time to sit down and eat a full main meal. Offering cold and hot filled baguettes, paninis, rolls, pizza, bagels, jacket potatoes, fresh fruit and yoghurt - it’s perfect for students attending lunchtime lessons or clubs.
What else is on offer?
Wake Up Bars
Most comprehensives offer a Wake Up bar serving food like toast, hot filled rolls and bowls of cereal before school starts, for pupils to enjoy a breakfast with their friends.
Mid Morning Break
Unlike primary schools, comprehensive canteens are open and serve hot and cold foods and drinks during break time. It’s a perfect opportunity for pupils to grab a snack and refuel before lunchtime, as lunches can be as late as 1.30pm.
These are available in most secondary schools for use all day and after school. They are full of healthy, nutritious foods like pasta pots, sandwiches and drinks.

If your child has an allergy
If you would like your child to have a school meal at dinner time but are worried because they suffer with food allergy or food intolerance, a menu plan can be devised especially for your child (medical/dietetic confirmation will be required).
Our management team are nutritionally trained and can work with you, the parent, in preparing a menu that you and your child are happy with. We will then inform your child’s school and catering team of the allergy/intolerance and ensure the menu is delivered daily.
Examples of our special diet menus: Dairy Free, Egg Free, Gluten Free, Nut Free
For more information, or if you would like to discuss your child’s needs, contact the Catering Services on 01656 815963 or email email@example.com.
Bridgend County Borough Councils Children’s Directorate has implemented a cashless catering school meals system into a number of schools, to offer parents and carers an alternative method of payment for school meals.
The system is securely integrated with the Council’s payment service to allow internet payment transactions to take place, instead of pupils taking cash into schools.
Free school meal eligibility is entered into the system via the school, allowing the eligible pupils to receive their school lunch with anonymity.
The following schools are currently utilising the system:

Why should I choose a school lunch for my child?
Bridgend Catering Services believe there are many benefits to having a school lunch.
- Meals are freshly made, healthy and nutritionally balanced.
- It is recommended that we eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. On a daily basis a school meal offers vegetables, salads and fruit for children to choose, therefore helping towards the '5 a day'.
- Convenience - saving you time preparing packed lunches.
- Enhanced learning abilities - studies have shown that children are more receptive in classes if they have had a fulfilling lunchtime meal.
- Teaches children social skills, table manners and how to make meal choices.
- Allows a child to relax in a safe, supervised environment with friends.
Bridgend Catering Services would like to take the opportunity to assure parents that:
- The primary menus fully comply with the Welsh Government's Appetite for Life food, drink and nutrient standards.
- We have an excellent reputation for cleanliness and hygiene and we are committed to meeting all Health, Safety and Hygiene Regulations.
- Purchasing procedures assist the sourcing of safe ingredients and ensure the necessary delivery and storage methods to maintain the highest levels of food safety.
- We have modified our recipes to reduce sugar, salt and fat content and increase fibre.
- We avoid using artificial additives and colourings and do not knowingly use food containing GM (genetically modified) ingredients.
- We regard your child as a valued customer and serve all children in a friendly and supportive manner.
In 2005, the Welsh Government launched a free breakfast scheme in Wales offering primary school pupils a free, healthy breakfast every morning in their school. Breakfast clubs are currently running in 45 primary schools in Bridgend County Borough. The clubs serve cereal and toast every morning with fruit wedges and a choice of milk or fruit juice to drink.
