Commemorative Bench Plaque

Applications for a commemorative bench plaque within the Authority will need to be in writing.

The Authority will provide appropriate benches that will accommodate commemorative plaques to be affixed. The benches provided will be specific for the particular location or area in which they are located e.g. Bryngarw Country Park, Kenfig National Nature reserve, cemeteries, parks, conservation areas etc. The materials used in these benches will be sustainable and should provide a lasting reminder whilst giving visitors a comfortable resting point

You will be able to choose from a small range of plaque designs and guidance on wording is provided when selecting a plaque (There is a limited choice of font style and size). Please be aware that the Authority reserves the right to vary or refuse an unsuitable inscription.

In order to give as many people the opportunity to remember their loved ones at their chosen location, there will be a mix of benches provided that will accommodate either a single plaque dedication or up to 3 individual plaque dedications on one bench. Each application is limited to one plaque on a bench per commemoration. Dependent upon the availability of Commemorative Plaque spaces on benches, you may be able to choose the bench and position of your chosen plaque. The applicant is also advised to meet with the appropriate authority staff to agree the location of their plaque prior to submission of the application.

Because of the need for the Authority to balance the needs of all visitors to its locations, the actual areas available for commemorative benches, their positions and numbers within those areas will be at its own discretion. Should there be a need to remove or move a bench for any reason then the Authority will advise the applicant of the new location. Unfortunately we are unable to install new benches in every area or areas that have an over provision of seating.

The bench plaques will be dedicated for a period of 10 years and this is included in the price for each commemorative plaque. After 10 years, the authority will contact the applicant to advise whether the plaque will need to be removed and for you to collect it if you wish, or offer a possible extension for a further period, although this will incur additional charges to maintain the upkeep of the bench and renew the commemorative plaque as required. If the applicant does not respond, the plaque will be removed and kept for a period of 12 months.

Applicants are advised to keep the Authority informed of any change of address during the term of dedication to ensure that records are maintained

Applicants should be aware that once the plaque has been affixed to the bench it becomes the property of the Authority, who would take responsibility for any maintenance requirements.  Applicants are advised that no maintenance of any kind should be undertaken by themselves, their family or representatives.

The Authority hopes that applicants will understand that the number of seats is a major consideration if it is to keep public spaces looking attractive and uncluttered. For this reason, applicants should note that no floral memorials or other expressions of remembrance are to be placed at any time on or near the benches where the plaque has been affixed. It should also be noted that scattering of ashes can only be undertaken with consent at either the Crematorium or one of our cemeteries.
