How the council works

Residents are represented on Bridgend County Borough Council by 54 elected councillors:

Labour 27
Liberal Democrats  6
Independent Annibynwyr 9
Plaid Cymru 1
Conservative 6
Independent 2
Democratic Independents 3

The authority has adopted a Leader and Cabinet structure. Every year, the council elects a Leader and appoints the members of Cabinet.

The Cabinet has to make decisions which are in line with the council's budget and policy framework. If it wishes to make a decision which is outside the budget or policy framework, this must be referred for Council as a whole to decide.

Decisions taken by the Cabinet are subject to scrutiny.

Following the county borough elections in May 2008, a Cabinet was formed comprised of Labour councillors.
