Superfast Cymru brings high-speed internet to Bridgend County Borough
Residents and businesses across Bridgend County Borough are among the first in Wales to benefit from access to high speed internet, thanks to the multi-million pound ‘Superfast Cymru’ programme which is installing fibre broadband nationwide.
Unlike traditional broadband, which is delivered via copper telephone lines, fibre broadband uses fibre optic cable, making it much faster and more reliable.
As well as the obvious benefits of making it quicker for people to download emails and browse the internet, fibre is also opening up a range of new opportunities for local businesses to exploit.
The service is currently available in areas of Aberkenfig, Bridgend, Pencoed, Pontycymer, Porthcawl, Kenfig Hill, Maesteg and the Ogmore Valley – and you can find out if it’s available in your area by clicking here.
Households and businesses which want superfast speeds need to contact an internet service provider (ISP) to sign up to receive fast fibre – the upgrade is not automatic.
There are several ISPs offering fibre broadband in Wales so customers can shop around and choose the package is best for them.
If they choose not to upgrade to fibre broadband, they will be able to continue using their existing broadband service.
If you don’t have broadband today, you might want to consider the benefits – such as making it easier to apply for public services, gaining new skills, getting the best deals through online shopping and using your bank’s online services.
What’s more, multiple users can do all of these things at the same time, under the same roof.
The Superfast Cymru programme is a partnership between BT and the Welsh Government, and is fully supported by Bridgend County Borough Council.
The latest figures show that more than half a million premises across Wales now have access to superfast broadband thanks to Superfast Cymru.
