The 2011 Census

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has published most of the key statistics from the 2011 Census. The Census is the most comprehensive survey of the United Kingdom population. It aims to count all people and households at the same time and asks a set of questions to allow comparison between different areas of the country and different groups of people.

The Census has been carried out every 10 years since 1801, with the exception of 1941. The most recent Census was held on 27 March 2011.

Key statistics now published include

  • Usual resident population
  • Age structure
  • Welsh language skills
  • Household composition
  • Ethnic group
  • Religion
  • Health and provision of unpaid care
  • Tenure
  • Rooms, bedrooms and central heating
  • Car or van availability
  • Qualifications and students
  • Economic activity
  • Employment by Industry
  • Length of residence in the UK

You can look at these local authority area statistics in detail on the ONS website here.

All statistics tables for smaller geographical areas including Output Areas (OAs) and for wards have also now been published. These can be viewed through the Neighbourhood Statistics site here.

ONS has also provided an online comparable tool that enables comparisons between 2001 and 2011 Census key statistics. This tool can be downloaded here.
