Drop-in session announced for £3m town beach project

16 February 2018

As work begins on the lower prom of Porthcawl’s town beach, a drop-in information session has been arranged to keep residents and visitors up to date with the £3m scheme.

The session, which has been organised by contractor Alun Griffiths, will take place at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl on Tuesday 27 February between 3.30pm - 7pm, and will include a chance to ask questions and view an artist’s impression of what the finished project will look like.

Intended to replace ageing sea defences at the town’s ‘tarmac beach’ and enable it to continue to protect 260 seafront properties and businesses from flooding and coastal erosion, the work will introduce an attractive, all-new terraced design with a sand-coloured surface.

The information session will also coincide with a closure of the lower prom in order to allow large sections of sea wall to be removed and replaced, and materials to be stored.

Councillor Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “The town beach is going to become an increasingly busy site over the next few months, and residents and visitors can expect to see the excavation of the existing beach area, repairs and surfacing work on the access ramps, the installation of all-new concrete terraces, repointing and repairs to the existing sea wall, the construction of protective ‘rock armour’ and more.

“Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience while the work is underway, and the project will also deliver additional benefits, including new jobs and training opportunities, as well as support for local businesses.

“Come along to the information session at the Grand Pavilion to find out more, or visit for further details.”
