Bridgend chiropractic clinic has healthy start with help from funding

21 September 2017

Two Bridgend-based entrepreneurs have become the most recent beneficiaries of funding from Bridgend County Borough Council and UK Steel Enterprise to help kick-start their business.

Husband and wife team, Katie and Michael Belcher have recently launched Sandford Chiropractic at Castle View, Bridgend with support from a Kickstart grant provided by the council’s Economy and Natural Resources team in partnership with UK Steel Enterprise.

The couple used the £1,000 fund aimed at new start-ups and micro-businesses, to invest in new equipment at the practice.

Business owner and qualified Chiropractor, Dr Michael Belcher said: “At Sandford, we help people by giving them relief from pain, and postural correction to prevent problems in the future.

“Our business also specialises in sports chiropractic, with a focus on helping people to recover from general injuries or pain in the musculoskeletal system.”

Michael’s wife and business partner, Katie Belcher manages the day-to-day running of the business fromordering supplies to booking appointments.

Michael said: “At present, the only other member of staff is Leonard the skeleton, but we hope to take on more admin support in the near future and recruit another Chiropractor in the longer term.

“It’s a very exciting time for us, launching the business, and we have already seen a substantial demand for our services. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Bridgend County Borough Council and UK Steel Enterprise for supporting our business in its infancy.

“Our current focus is on promoting ourselves and building on our good reputation.”

Michael believes that Chiropractic has an important role in health care, but is not fully valued for its preventative role.

Michael added: “Many NHS health boards are not fully on board with Chiropractic, and its preventative value is underestimated.

“It is well known that the country loses billions of pounds every year in lost work due to back pain and other skeletal problems, much of which is preventable.”

Glyn Thomas, Area Manager in Wales for UK Steel Enterprise, said: “We are very pleased to have been able to help Katie and Michael launch their business and we wish them every success.”

Councillor Charles Smith, the council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “We are delighted once again, to be able to help another start-up business in Bridgend County with crucial investment capital. Often, obtaining funding for a business can prove difficult, particularly in the early stages.

“We understand the value that this extra support, no matter how small, has for businesses like Sandford Chiropractic. It’s great to see new enterprises reaping the rewards of the Kick-start programme.”
