Dog mess problem spots targeted by council

15 September 2017

Efforts are being made to reduce dog fouling at two much-loved green spaces in Bridgend County Borough.

New signs, which also include a supply of dog waste bags, have been installed at both Maesteg Welfare Park and at the Woodlands playing fields in Pencoed to encourage all dog owners to be responsible and pick up after their pooches.

Councillor Richard Young, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Dog fouling is one of the biggest frustrations that constituents report, and we’re targeting these two locations due to the number of complaints we receive about them being problem spots for dog mess.

“When you consider that these fields are used by children to play sports every week, it is particularly frustrating that the minority of selfish dog owners spoil it for so many other people.

“These new signs have been installed for a trial period at both locations, and we’ll be monitoring how effective they are in encouraging irresponsible dog owners to change their habits by bagging and binning their dog’s waste, rather than just leaving it.

“If they are proven to be a success, then we’ll look at whether we can install more of these units across the county borough.

“Dog waste bags are even supplied at the bottom of these new signs, so there’s absolutely no excuse for any dog owner not to pick up after their pet. Please be considerate to others – bag it, bin it.”
