Work starts on all-new primary school for Pencoed

3 October 2017

A ground-breaking ceremony has taken place to mark the start of work on the all-new £10.8m Pencoed Primary School.

Featuring a 70-place nursery and facilities for children with special educational needs, the new school will also cater for up to 510 pupils aged between four and eleven and will include sports and leisure facilities that can be shared with the wider community.

When the new premises open in September 2018, they will bring the whole school together on a single site for the first time in its history.

The current school was built in the early 1900s and provides separate infant and junior education across different sites in Pencoed, including premises at Heol y Cyw.

As well as integrating the school at a single location, the new premises will mean that children are no longer required to cross a busy main road several times a day in order to walk between classes.

The project is being jointly funded by Bridgend County Borough Council and the Welsh Government’s 21st century schools programme.

Councillor Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration, said: “This marks something of a milestone for both the local community of Pencoed and the council’s ongoing school modernisation programme.

“Over the years, the existing school buildings have been of great service to generations of local people, but a modern integrated facility is now required to ensure that we can provide the best educational environment possible while continuing to look after the well-being of pupils.

"I am really pleased that work on the new primary school has begun, and would like to thank our partners in the Welsh Government, pupils, teachers, governors, school staff and everyone else who is helping to make this a reality for the people of Pencoed.”
