Suggest a name for new Extra Care development

24 November 2017

Linc Build

Forty five state-of-the-art ‘Extra Care’ housing units are being built in Ynysawdre for elderly and vulnerable people, and the local community are being invited to get involved in the project by naming the new development and the street running through it.

£50 gift vouchers are up for grabs for the two chosen names, so put your thinking caps on and get creative! To enter the competition, please email before the closing date of 1 December 2017.

The winning names will be selected by builders Jehu Group, Linc Cymru Housing Association and Bridgend County Borough Council.

Councillor Philip White, the council’s Cabinet Member for Social Services and Early Help said: “The competition is a fantastic idea from Jehu Group and we hope it will help to bring the local community together and build a sense of pride surrounding an excellent project.

“Possible names could have local or national connections, may be historical or perhaps have a modern influence. I’m sure there will be lots of great ideas put forward – good luck!”

The new Extra Care development in Ynysawdre is being built next to Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen on the site of the former Archbishop McGrath School. The scheme includes 25 Extra Care flats and 15 residential care rooms. A new Brynmenyn Primary School is also taking shape on the same site.

Councillor White added: “Extra Care facilities enable tenants to live within their own apartments fitted with all the equipment they need to remain safe and independent, while also having round-the-clock support available on site.

“The facilities are designed to better meet people’s changing needs as they grow older while making sure that they can live independently and remain active for as long as possible.”

Marc Jehu, Construction Director at Jehu Group commented: “We love it when the community plays a part in developing their own neighbourhoods. This is such a fantastic and important development, so having the involvement of the local community leaves a real legacy.”

A second new Extra Care facility is being built in Maesteg. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2018 – early 2019.
