Dragon mascot helping to fire up healthy habits

17 November 2017

Dillan, Cai, Allie, or Dewi - he goes by many names, but this dragon mascot is very clear about the healthy messages he is helping to spread among local families across the county borough.

Thirty pre-school settings that are participating in Bridgend County Borough Council’s Healthy and Sustainable Pre-School Scheme have each been given a dragon, and are encouraged to let a different child take it home each weekend to record what healthy activities they’ve been up to.

Standing to Grow - a nursery based in the former Nantyffyllon Miners’ Institute in Maesteg - has been up and running for a year and is one of the settings taking part in the scheme.

Owner Amanda Standing said: “Our dragon, Dillan, is having a huge impact on health and well-being. Children are excited to share the new foods they have tasted and are enjoying more physical activities, with the whole family getting involved too.

“For example, one of our children, two-year old Gwenllian Davies, really made the most of her time with Dillan over the school holidays. Her family made sure that Dillan ate healthy foods and got plenty of exercise. Dillan even had the flu jab!”

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations, said: “This creative initiative is a great way of encouraging families to think even more about the importance of healthy habits. When they take the dragon home, the children are told that he loves being healthy and getting active.

“It’s great to hear that the initiative is doing so well and having an impact with on the whole family, not just the children.”
