Councillor to give the Armed Forces his full attention

01 November 2017

Armed Forces representatives have met with Bridgend County Borough Council’s new Armed Forces Champion to discuss what support could be offered locally to veterans, serving personnel and their families.

Councillor Richard Young, who is also the council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, is keen for all local organisations to consider how they could work together to build upon the support that is already offered thanks to the Bridgend Armed Forces Community Covenant.

After hosting an ‘Armed Forces Meet and Greet’ at the local authority’s Civic Offices in Bridgend, Councillor Young said: “In 2013 we were pleased to join the Armed Forces community, other public service organisations, local businesses and the charitable and voluntary sectors in signing the Bridgend Armed Forces Community Covenant.

“That was a pledge to provide members of the Armed Forces community with appropriate help, support and advice, and we are pleased to have introduced several beneficial initiatives over the last four years.

“For example, thanks to Welsh Government funding, we’ve teamed up with our partners Halo to offer free swimming across the county borough to serving personnel and veterans.

“We also amended our housing policy to prioritise applicants who require adapted accommodation due to injuries sustained while in service, or who need to find somewhere to live as a result of having left the Armed Forces.

“The Council Tax Reduction Scheme has also been changed so that war widow pensions are no longer included when calculating a person’s income, while our School Place Allocation Policy was amended to ensure that veterans were not disadvantaged when returning to Bridgend County Borough.

“Having recently become the local authority’s new Armed Forces Champion I was keen to meet with representatives from the Armed Forces community, and I’m looking forward to being involved in helping to develop future opportunities that will further demonstrate Bridgend County Borough’s continued pride and appreciation of our Armed Forces.”
