8,000 families go potty for recycling by signing up for nappy collections

31 October 2017

Nearly 8,000 homes have now signed up for Bridgend County Borough Council’s new purple bag collections, which enable residents to recycle disposable nappies and other absorbent hygiene products (AHP).

Once collected from homes each fortnight, the bags are taken for processing at the pioneering Nappicycle plant in Ammanford where they recover all recyclable materials. The cellulose fibres from nappies are recycled into fibre boards and acoustic panelling, while the plastics are sent for further re-processing.

Since Bridgend County Borough Council introduced the new purple AHP bag collections in June, more than 278 tonnes of AHP waste has been recycled instead of ending up in landfill, which is equivalent to 46 elephants or 23 double decker buses!

Councillor Hywel Williams, the council’s Deputy Leader, said: “There are still plenty of new homes signing up for the AHP collections, with more than 100 residents registering during the last week alone. If you haven’t already registered, but would benefit from the collections, please sign up either by phone or email.

“It’s really important to remember that anyone who needs the service has to register for it first, and also don’t forget that the collections are made every two weeks on the same day that your blue bin bags are picked up.

“If they aren’t recycled, disposable nappies can take up to 500 years to fully break down, so we’re really pleased that the numbers of nappies that we are sending to landfill has been dramatically reduced thanks to this new service.

“As 38 per cent of all UK methane emissions come from landfill, if we reduce the amount of absorbent hygiene products and disposable nappies that are sent to landfill it will have a significant positive impact on Wales’ greenhouse emissions.”

Councillor Williams added: “Anyone who is nearly running out of their purple AHP bags will need to call or email to request more – they won’t be sent out automatically.”

To sign up, or request more bags, please call 01656 643643 (+option 2) or email recyclingandwaste@bridgend.gov.uk

In total, the AHP service caters for children’s nappies, wipes, paper tissues, stoma bags, adult incontinence nappies and pads, absorbent bed sheets, plastic gloves and disposable aprons. It doesn’t cater for feminine hygiene products – these should be placed in bin bags with the rest of your non-recyclable waste.

As well as utilising the new AHP collections, parents are also advised that they have another ‘green’ option, as Bridgend County Borough Council has teamed up with The Nappy Gurus to subsidise real nappy starter packs.

Anyone who would like to try re-usable real nappies as an alternative to disposables can buy the packs for only £15 – a 70 per cent discount on the £50 RRP. To find out more, please email bridgendnappyguru@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/thebridgendnappyguru.
