Childcare settings pick up award for giving kids a healthy start to life

25 May 2017

Two local childcare settings have picked up an award for their outstanding efforts in giving children a healthy start to life.

Sadie and Frank’s Day Nursery in Nantyffyllon, and the ‘Simply Out of School’ club which provides after-school care at Maes Yr Haul Primary School, have each been rewarded with a ‘Gold Standard Healthy Snack Award’.

The award has been designed to raise awareness of healthy eating practices and demonstrate what can be achieved by providing nutritious snacks for children in childcare settings, and has been developed locally in a multi-agency partnership with representatives from Bridgend County Borough Council, Public Health Wales, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, City and County of Swansea, and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Future Generations, said: “Both of these settings are promoting good practices that improve the health and wellbeing of children and establish healthy habits from a young age.

“To attain this award, settings have to demonstrate that they provide healthy snacks and drinks, as well as a suitable eating environment, and follow appropriate hygiene and dental health standards.

“The council’s Childcare Team have been closely involved from the outset of the award’s creation, and are looking forward to supporting many more local childcare settings to enable them achieve the award too.”

The award is open to playgroups, nurseries, childminders, parent and toddler groups, and out of school child care clubs across the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg area, and to find out more please contact Bridgend County Borough Council’s Childcare Team by calling 01656 642649.

The ‘Simply Out of School’ club provides after-school care for Maes Yr Haul Primary pupils between three-years-old and 12-years-old. Sadie and Frank’s Day Nursery in Nantyffyllon offer day care to children aged from three months up to 12-years-old.
