Schoolchildren inspired by chance to see historic golfing silverware

15 June 2017

Almost 1,000 schoolchildren from Corneli, Porthcawl, West Park and Mynydd Cynffig primary schools came face-to-face with one of golf’s most historic trophies recently ahead of Bridgend County Borough being put in the golfing spotlight once again.

With 144 players from 24 countries competing in the 114th Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championships at the Pyle and Kenfig club this week (13 – 17 June), the silverware took a tour of local schools, inspiring more youngsters to take up the game.

Many of the world’s finest players first broke through the ranks as winners of the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship including Anna Nordqvist, Georgia Hall, Carlota Ciganda and Catriona Matthew.

This year’s champion will win exempt entry into the US Women’s Open at Trump National, New Jersey in July and the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Kingsbarns Golf Links, near St Andrews, in August.

Spectator admission and parking is free at the Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club for the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship, and you can find out more at www.randa.org

Later this summer, from 27-30 July, Wales’ biggest golfing event of the year will be hosted just up the road at the Royal Porthcawl club when legends of the game play in the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex. For tickets, visit www.senioropenchampionship.com or call 0800 023 2557.
