FREE ParkLives activity sessions will get families moving this summer

18 July 2017

The ‘ParkLives’ initiative starts in Bridgend County Borough next week, bringing a series of FREE family-friendly outdoor activities to local parks and green spaces throughout the school summer holidays.

Funded by Coca-Cola, and supported locally by Bridgend County Borough Council, the ParkLives sessions will make the most of the great outdoors in Bridgend, Porthcawl and Maesteg.

Most of the action is taking place at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend. Every Thursday from 27 July to 31 August there will be hour-long activities including ‘Mini Gladiators’, ‘Gladiators’, Zumba, Assault Course, Balance Bikes and Parkour to choose from…all for FREE!

The Mini Gladiators and Gladiators sessions involve obstacle-based games for children and their families, while there will be more obstacles to negotiate when running, jumping and climbing around a Parkour course that will be suitable for all abilities.

During the school holidays there will also be FREE ParkLives family Tai Chi and Wellbeing sessions every Thursday at Newbridge Fields, every Monday at Porthcawl Wilderness Lakes, every Tuesday at Kenfig Nature Reserve, and every Friday at Maesteg Welfare Park. Also look out for Walking and Nordic Walking sessions too.

You can sample some of the ParkLives activities this Saturday 22 July at Newbridge Fields (1pm - 3pm) as part of a special free event to launch both ParkLives and the Summer Reading Challenge which is returning to local libraries.

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, the council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the ParkLives initiative is coming to the county borough. Being more active can make such a huge impact on not only your physical health, but your mental health too, so any initiative that makes physical activity even more accessible to local residents is fantastic.

“We hope these free ParkLives activities will add even more colour and fun to our parks and green spaces this summer, and will offer something for everyone. The initiative is already very popular in other cities and towns across the UK, and we’re sure that these sessions will inspire many local families.”

ParkLives in Bridgend County Borough is part of a partnership with Swansea and Neath Port Talbot and is funded until 2020. All of the ParkLives activities are FREE, and any children aged under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Families can turn up on the day for all ParkLives sessions, and if you have any queries please call 01656 815119.
