Faldo the latest legend confirmed for Senior Open

13 July 2017

The legends of golf are coming to Royal Porthcawl this month, with Sir Nick Faldo the latest big name to be confirmed for the star-studded field that will compete for the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex from 27-30 July.

Six-time Major champion Faldo, the most successful British golfer in history, celebrates his 60th birthday on 18 July and believes there is no better way to mark more than 40 years as a professional than playing once again.

He said: "Playing a little competitive golf is part of my own plan for celebrating my 60th birthday and I look forward to playing the Senior Open. I have played a couple of Champions Tour events in the United States over the past month and know a little more about my game.

“The Senior Tour players share many memories. I expect as a group we bring back special memories of an era for golf fans. These players are also creating some special moments on the golf course as they continue to play with tremendous focus and produce memorable winning results. It is my goal to create a winning memory or two at Royal Porthcawl and I look forward to it all.”

Fijian Vijay Singh will also bid to add to his haul of three Major Championships when he makes his Senior Open Championship debut at Royal Porthcawl in what will be just his fourth European Senior Tour event.

Singh is one of a number of former Major Champions competing for the Senior Claret Jug later this month, joining the likes of José María Olazábal, Fred Couples, John Daly, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Tom Watson, Todd Hamilton and Ian Woosnam in the star-studded field.

Several Ryder Cup rivalries will also be renewed with a host of former captains and players set to tee it up on the Welsh links, including Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie, Sam Torrance, Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Constantino Rocca, Jesper Parnevik, Philip Price and the reigning Senior Open champion, Paul Broadhurst.

Tickets and hospitality packages for the Senior Open Championship are still available, including the recently announced Youth Ticket, a more affordable ticket option for those aged 16-24. Under 16s are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

In addition to full price season and day tickets, the Senior Open Championship is now offering Twilight Tickets (entry after 3pm) for Thursday 27 July and Friday 28 July, priced £13.50 in advance or £15 on the gate.

Councillor Huw David, the Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex is taking place in Bridgend County Borough once again and we’re pleased to be one of the event partners. Three years ago, we were proud that the first golf ‘Major’ ever to be played in Wales was hosted here, and we’re delighted to welcome fans back to our corner of the golfing world. It will be a tough task to top 2014 but I know that everyone at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club has pulled out all the stops to provide excellent playing conditions yet again.

“There has also been tremendous support from local residents, volunteers and businesses, with everyone collectively recognising how hugely beneficial golf tourism is for the local economy and raising our profile to a global audience.”
