Car show and street market in stall for Bridgend town centre

10 July 2017

Bridgend town centre is revving up to host a ‘Classic Car Show’ and its next monthly street market on Saturday 15 July.

Organised by Bridgend County Borough Council in partnership with the Glamorgan Classic Car Club, the car show will celebrate the golden age of motoring with dozens of vintage vehicles on display from 10am – 4pm.

Classic vehicles parked in the town centre’s streets will include a good mix of cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s such as MGs, Fords, Rovers and Jaguars, as well as Harley Davidson and Honda Goldwing motorbikes and two LGV tractors, while families will also be able to enjoy a close look at a modern fire engine and police cars.

Prizes, sponsored by the Bridgend Indoor Market, will be given to the best car in show and the best motorbike in show.

Also on the same day, the street market will see around 20 market chalets line Caroline Street, selling food, hand-made crafts and unique products.

Among the local traders selling their wares will be the ‘Bang On Brewery’. Based on Bridgend Industrial Estate, the local brewers needed to re-stock their ales and stouts by 1pm last month, such was their popularity, so they’re looking forward to another busy day’s trading.

‘Taste of Thailand’, who recently opened in the nearby Bridgend Indoor Market, will also be giving out tasters, while there will also be craft cider on sale from the Vale of Glamorgan as well as traders from further afield bringing something new to the town.

Local artist Cerys Knighton will hope to draw in the crowds, while visitors can brush up on their language skills with some quick Welsh lessons on one of the stalls.

The street market has been organised by Bridgend County Borough Council with support from town centre traders who are part of the ‘CF31’ group, and will take place from 10am – 4pm. Further street markets will then take place on Saturday 19 August and Saturday 16 September.

Councillor Charles Smith, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration, said: “Saturday 15 July is lining up to be a bumper day for Bridgend town centre. With plenty on offer for shoppers, music and entertainment for the kids and lots of eateries, the monthly street market is proving to be an excellent addition to the town centre.

“The Classic Car Show was a bit hit with local families last year, and there will be well over 60 cars on display again this year, bringing plenty of colour, fun and nostalgia to the town centre’s streets.”
