Community groups encouraged to apply for funding

01 December

Community groups and sports clubs, who encourage local people to be physically active, or take part in sport, are being urged to take advantage of funding opportunities.

The Community Chest Grant Scheme is funded by Sport Wales via the Lottery Sports Fund for Wales but is managed locally by Bridgend County Borough Council.

Currently, there is still £29,000 worth of funding left for local sports clubs and organisations across Bridgend County Borough, wishing to encourage people to be more active, more often. Any organisation with a bank account in their name can apply for a grant of up to £1500.

Funding can be provided for any 12 month period and for a variety of purposes, including start-up costs, projects that deliver increased participation and improve standards, coach education and volunteer development, equipment, training, initial facility hire and instructor’s costs for new sessions.

Further funding is available for clubs promoting sports for women and girls, disability sports and social inclusion.

Cllr Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing & Future Generations said: “We know that there’s plenty of grassroots sporting and fitness clubs out there across Bridgend County Borough with a lot of hard work going into each of them – and it’d be a shame if they missed out on possible funding which could help them grow or improve what they offer.

“A grant such as this can assist with the continuation and development of clubs which will hopefully increase activity across the borough. In addition, I would encourage anyone who is interested in introducing a new sport or club to Bridgend County Borough, to take advantage of the scheme.

“Sports clubs and community groups are not just helping people to get fit and stay fit – they’re also helping to bring people together, give them a chance to make new friends and socialise.

“I’d encourage any community group who think they could benefit from grant support to get in touch and take advantage of this opportunity.”

The Community Chest application process is an online system. Applicants need to visit the Sport Wales funding pages where advice and guidance is given on what sort of things can be funded.

If you are part of an organisation or sports club, and would like to find out more about how to apply, please contact Andrew Jones on 01656 642745 or email
