Help shape your community at the ‘Valleys Taskforce’ event

31 August 2017

Residents of Bridgend County Borough are being given an opportunity to have their say on the future of South Wales’ valley communities.

Organised by Welsh Government, a ‘Valleys Taskforce’ event will be held at Maesteg Town Hall on Thursday 7 September between 6pm-7.30pm where people will be able to find out more about the ‘Our Valleys, Our Future’ plan launched recently by Alun Davies, Minister for Lifelong Learning and Welsh Language.

The plan aims to create thousands of new jobs across the South Wales valleys and get an extra 7,000 people into work by 2021.

Created following consultation with people living in valley communities, it seeks to maximise job opportunities in businesses such as retail, care and the food industry, and encourage and provide more support for existing and potential entrepreneurs.

The taskforce was set up a year ago to work with communities and local businesses, and deliver lasting economic change in the region by creating jobs that are closer to people’s homes, improving skill levels and delivering greater prosperity.

It is intended to help ensure that the plan can continue to reflect the views of local residents.

A number of BCBC initiatives also exhibiting at the event. These will include:

  • The Upper Llynfi Valley Heat Energy project that aims to provide cheap heating using the area’s numerous former mine workings.
  • The transformation of Maesteg Town Hall with the development of new community facilities.
  • The Bridges into Work 2 initiative that aims to help local people access new training and employment opportunities.

Councillor Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education, said: “Our Valleys, Our Future is a hugely ambitious project that is designed to have a significant positive impact on the lives of thousands of people.

“Minister Alun Davies has previously stated that if the Valleys Taskforce is to succeed, local communities and local people must be at the heart of the initiative, and I believe that this is indeed the case.

“I hope that as many people as possible will attend the event at Maesteg Town Hall and help ensure that the plan reflects their needs and aspirations.”
