Get busy this half-term with ideas from new ‘play’ website
24 October 2016
If you’re stuck for ideas to keep youngsters entertained this half-term, Bridgend County Borough Council’s new ‘play’ website could have just what you’re looking for.
The ‘Let’s Go Bridgend’ website focuses on play and encourages local families to have more quality time together. You can find ideas for family days out and activities with a tool to search for things to do inside or outdoors, whatever the weather. There’s also a special features section with advice for parents and carers, as well as handy tips for playtime at home.
The council has developed the website to help fulfil the play sufficiency statutory duty set by Welsh Government. Wales is the first country in the world to place the statutory duty on local authorities to secure sufficient play opportunities for children and young people up to the age of 17.
As part of its plans to prioritise play, the council is also working to develop a play network that can support parents and carers, community groups, schools and other groups to increase local play opportunities.
Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Services and Equalities, Councillor Hailey Townsend, said: “Our Play Action Plan focuses on working with partners to secure play opportunities for children and young people in the county borough because of the benefits it can deliver.
“We want residents to make the best use of local areas such as playgrounds and open spaces, as well as organised play schemes. The new website will help improve the available information about play and help ensure that play is recognised as an important part of a child’s life.”
