Three Blue Flags for Bridgend County Borough

31 May 2016

Rest Bay, Trecco Bay and Porthcawl Marina have all been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Award by Keep Wales Tidy.

The accolade means that they rank among the very best as a Blue Flag is only awarded to beaches and marinas that boast the highest quality of water, environmental education and management, safety and services.

It acts as a guarantee to everyone that a beach or marina is among the finest not only in the country, but around the world.

The Blue Flag Award is handed out in 49 countries across the world, and in Wales the awards are managed by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy.

Forty seven sites around Wales will proudly fly the Blue Flag this year, and Porthcawl Marina is one of five new sites to receive the honour.

Keep Wales Tidy works with partners including Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales and Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, as well as local authorities and volunteers across Wales to help keep standards high by restoring, protecting and maintaining the fantastic array of beaches Wales has to offer.

Not only does a Blue Flag show locals and visitors that they have arrived at a clean, safe and beautiful beach, it is also a mark of quality that sets the beach out as an asset to its community and local businesses that will drive and increase tourism.

Lesley Jones, Chief Executive for Keep Wales Tidy said: “I’m delighted that Wales has seen an increase in awards this year. Over the last 30 years, Blue Flag has had a transformational impact on water quality, environmental awareness and management, safety and top class facilities at our beaches and marinas. Blue Flag has become a world renowned eco-label trusted by millions around the globe.

“The coastline is very important for Wales as it boosts local economies and the tourism industry and allows us to showcase our beautiful country.

“In 2015 we saw a growth of seven per cent of visitors to the Welsh coastline and as a mark of quality the Wales Coast Awards are pivotal to the continuing growth of coastal tourism, whilst also ensuring the beaches and marinas are managed effectively to accommodate the increase in visitors.

“I’d like to congratulate all our winners and thank everyone who’s involved in making this year’s Wales Coast Awards a great success.”
