Apprentice star helps pupils learn tricks of the market trade

31 May 2016

A former star of TV show ‘The Apprentice’ has been helping budding entrepreneurs from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Bridgend to brush up on their market trading banter!

Pupils who attend the school’s ‘Young Dragons’ business club picked up tips from Adam Corbally, a former market stallholder who shone in Lord Sugar’s boardroom in 2012, when they attended a special enterprise event last week in Swansea Market.

Run by Swansea University’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership, the ‘Flash & Banter’ initiative saw children spend a day under the tutelage of Adam and other experts to learn some tricks of the market trade which will help prepare them for a forthcoming school project.

Each term, the St Mary’s ‘Young Dragons’ learn about all aspects of business by having a go at creating new products, carrying out market research and calculating their costs and profit margins.

Teacher Lowri Pike, who runs the club, said: “This term, our pupils are creating a product called ‘Bloom Bottles’, which involves turning plastic bottles into decorations.

“The children are really enthused by the business club and the day at Swansea Market gave them a fun insight into how to present and sell your product.

“Adam encouraged everyone to have a go at pitching and our pupils loved having a bit of ‘banter’ with the customers! The pupils learned a lot and are really excited about their Bloom Bottles which they will now be presenting to a panel of experts on Wednesday 15 June when they’ll be competing against five other schools to try and win a day’s trading in Swansea Market.”

The ‘Flash & Banter’ event coincided with Love your Local Market Fortnight (17 – 31 May), which encourages people across the UK to support their local markets and also consider whether a market stall would be ideal for their business.
