World famous pianists put on a show at valleys primary school

17 May 2016

It’s not every day that a grand piano gets delivered to your school, or that two world-renowned pianists put on a concert for you!

But that’s exactly what happened at Abercerdin Primary School, near Gilfach Goch, last week.

Professor Julian Jacobson and Mariko Brown are more used to performing in the surroundings of Berlin, Prague and London, but the duo gave the pupils a once in a lifetime experience by swapping the Royal Albert Hall for Abercerdin’s school hall.

They started with Bach, before moving on to Beethoven and continuing with a harmonic masterclass of history’s finest composers.

Abercerdin Head teacher Helen Gentle said: “We worked extremely hard to organise this concert, which has been made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Iqbal Latif, a hotelier from London who has known Professor Jacobson for many years.

“To host a classical concert of this nature at our school is a huge privilege, and the children gasped when they first saw the grand piano!

“The area in which the school is based is recognised as having some of the highest levels of poverty in Wales, but we constantly strive to offer unique opportunities for the whole community that raise aspirations.

“It was a magical afternoon and something that we will remember forever.”

Mr Latif met a group of the school’s senior staff when they attended a course at his luxury five-star Hotel Rafayel in London.

He said: “We talked about the school and I thought that the children would love to hear this music. I hope that they will never forget the experience of seeing two world class musicians perform in their school.”

Councillor Huw David, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “Abercerdin Primary School was recently categorised as a ‘green’ school in the Welsh Government’s new categorisation system, placing them as one of the top schools in the country, while they also received a glowing inspection report last year.

“This concert is a further demonstration of the way that the school’s staff are constantly searching for innovative ways to capture their pupils’ imaginations and encourage them to achieve their dreams.

“I am sure that this concert will have struck a ‘chord’ with many pupils, and will certainly be a huge inspiration for those with musical ambitions.”
