Make a scarecrow to join in with Heronsbridge’s horticultural fun!

02 June 2016

Heronsbridge School in Bridgend is opening up its attractive gardens and orchard to the public next month, and they’d like to mark the occasion in style by creating a whole field of scarecrows!

On Sunday 26 June, the school will be taking part in ‘RHS Open Garden Day’ from 1pm – 4pm, and local families, schools, nurseries and clubs are all invited to add to the fun by making their own scarecrows which will take pride of place on the day and be entered into a competition.

The scarecrows will need to be made in advance and Rosamund Davies from the Royal Horticultural Society will judge all of the entries. The winners will receive gardening equipment for their school as well as free advice from award-winning garden designer Anthea Guthrie.

Heronsbridge Head Teacher Glynis James said: “Last year we had all sorts of imaginative scarecrows, including a mermaid, witch, wicker lady, onion seller and even a Bob Marley! We’d love to see even more creative designs this year, and fill an entire field with them as we open up our gardens to the public.”

To register for the scarecrow competition, please phone Heronsbridge on 01656 653974 or email

Scarecrows will need to be brought to the school between 20 – 24 June, and the judging will take place on Sunday 26 June.
