‘Hot shot’ netball teams go through to Bridgend finals
22 December 2016
Eight primary schools have netted a place in the finals of the Bridgend County Borough netball championship after shining on court at recent netball festivals organised in partnership by Bridgend County Borough Council and Welsh Netball.
Plasnewydd, Nantymoel, Maes yr Haul and West Park primary schools came top during four local festivals held recently, with runners-up Caerau, Ogmore Vale, Pencoed and Mynydd Cynffig schools also going through to the Bridgend County Borough finals, which will be held in February.
The top two teams at the finals will then go up against primary schools from Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taff in the Glamorgan Valleys final for the opportunity to reach the Welsh finals which will take place at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff in May.
Young netballers have been lucky enough to have three Celtic Dragon players on hand during the Bridgend County festivals. Bethan Dyke – Celtic Dragons WA/C from Bridgend, Kalifa McCollin – Celtic Dragons GA/GS from Trinidad and Tobago and Stacey Peeters – Celtic Dragons WD/C from New Zealand have been helping the teams on the court, giving tips to players, and giving autographs and having photos with the teams.
Councillor Hailey Townsend, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations, said: “It’s great to hear that so many local young people, girls and boys alike, are continuing to enjoy netball. We’ve seen some fantastic team work and dedication shown through these festivals.
“I’d like to say well done to all the teams that took part in this round of the tournament and thank you to the staff who have supported the children with their sport. I wish the best of luck to the teams going into the Bridgend finals and for further on in the competition.”
