Canoe believe it! Maesteg water sports club earns insport accreditation
15 December 2016
Maesteg Canoe Club is celebrating after being awarded with the Insport Bronze accreditation from Disability Sport Wales, which recognises inclusivity within sport clubs and organisations.
With support from Bridgend County Borough Council’s Active Young People Department (AYPD), Maesteg Canoe Club – which is a not-for-profit community club run by volunteers – has made various improvements so that there are equal opportunities for any members with disabilities.
Two of the club’s coaches went on UK disability inclusion training with Disability Sport Wales and attended UK safeguarding and protection training provided by the council’s AYPD.
The club also created the roles of Disability Inclusion Officer and Welfare Officer within the organisation, as well as developing policies such as a Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.
Over 50 members use the club for canoeing and kayaking in sea, surf, slalom and white water, with the activities being inclusive for members with disabilities.
Maesteg Canoe Club Chairperson Emily Daniels said: “We are very proud to have received this award and hope to continue building strong links and relationships within the community and surrounding area.
“We are now aiming for the Insport Silver level of inclusivity and to continue to provide opportunities for all.”
Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations, Councillor Hailey Townsend, said: “It’s great to see local clubs providing equal opportunities, no matter what abilities people have.
“All local organisations should strive to have inclusivity built in to the activities they offer, and we congratulate Maesteg Canoe Club for setting an example and being recognised for their efforts in doing this.”
Maesteg Canoe Club has several experienced coaches, is a member of Canoe Wales who are the National Governing Body for the sport and meets every Wednesday evening at Maesteg Swimming Pool between 7pm and 9pm. For more information, visit www.maestegcanoeclub.org or call 07528966436.
