I Have Housing Benefit Problems

This page is for people who have already made a claim for Housing Benefit or Local Housing Allowance.

Are you certain your application has been received?

If you did not deliver your application personally, and do not have a receipt or any correspondence from the Housing benefit department, you need to check that the application is being processed. This is very important as there are limited circumstances under which your claim can be backdated.

It is your responsibility to make a claim and follow it up! You could still lose your home even if you are entitled to Housing Benefit or Local Housing Allowance, if you don't give the correct information at the right time!

Did you provide all of the information that is needed to prove who you are, where you live and what income and outgoings you have? If not, your application will be delayed until you do provide the information

You may not need to take these documents to the office dealing with Housing Benefits. Ask other Council staff that you deal with (such as Housing Officers) if they can 'verify' documents for you.

Are you a person from abroad? You may not be eligible for benefits and/or housing.

Did you forget to complete a review form?

People who receive Housing Benefit must complete a review form so that they can continue to receive the benefit each year. If you are sent a review form, DON'T IGNORE IT! If you need help to fill it in, ask for help from the Council.

Did you know that your Council may be able to award you a Discretionary Housing Payment to top up your Housing Benefit?

Check your Council's website for details of how to apply.

If you are threatened with eviction, your Council may also have a  scheme to loan you money to meet rent arrears while your Housing Benefit or Local Housing Allowance is awaited

Ask your Council about this
