Plantlife

As Britain's only national membership charity dedicated exclusively to conserving all forms of plant life in their natural habitats, Plantlife is the champion of the nation's wild plants. It has 12,000 members, owns 22 nature reserves and has dedicated offices in England, Scotland and Wales. Plantlife is "lead partner" for 77 endangered plant species under the Government's Biodiversity Initiative. Through its species recovery programme - "Back from the Brink" - Plantlife implements Species Action Plans for these plants through survey, research, practical action and advice, in partnership with other key players. More than 300 Plantlife members - the "Flora Guardians" - participate in Back from the Brink as volunteers.

Plantlife also works internationally in order to implement the Global Plant Conservation Strategy, and in Europe in identifying the most "Important Plant Areas". For membership enquiries tel: 020 7808 0110 or see the Plantlife website www.plantlife.org.uk

Porthcawl Civic Trust Society

Porthcawl Civic Trust Society was formed in 1970 and has a membership of over 650. It is a registered charity and is registered with Civic Trust for Wales. It is believed to be the largest Civic Society in Wales.

Since its formation the Society has vigorously campaigned on a number of issues related to the protection of the coastline, the countryside and the built environment of Porthcawl. It has made a positive contribution to the town by, for example, planting the trees and shrubs that now form an attractive feature of the Nottage and Danygraig roundabouts and its scheme for the rebuilding of the Esplanade promenade was largely adopted by Ogwr Borough Council. The Society reviews all planning applications and considers those that may have an impact on the countryside or on the visual quality of the townscape and coastline.

The Society is managed by a voluntary Executive Committee of four officers and up to sixteen members who meet at monthly intervals. Elections to these posts are held at the Society's Annual General Meeting.
