Glamorgan
Bird Club
|
The Glamorgan Bird
Club is dedicated to the study and conservation of the birdlife in Eastern
Glamorgan, South Wales. The membership ranges from beginners to those
who are professionally involved in conservation. Our common interest
is the enjoyment of birds.
The club runs a
full programme of events, with indoor meetings on a wide range of subjects
and outdoor meetings led by some of our more experienced birdwatchers
to many different locations. Club members receive a quarterly newsletter,
giving up-to-date news and information. Each year we produce the comprehensive
Eastern Glamorgan Bird Report, free to our members, on the status of
birds in the region. Birdwatchers throughout the area submit observation
records to the County Recorder. These are then filed and provide an
invaluable database. In addition, we operate a telephone information
line that lets members know 'what's about', and we also have our own
Web site, in partnership with the Gower Ornithological Society, which
can be found at www.glamorganbirds.org.uk
Follow the link to the Glamorgan Bird Club on the home page. This site
also has a recent sightings page.
We're a friendly
and welcoming bunch, so - whatever your level of knowledge - if you
think you might like to join in any of our activities, and want to find
out more, get in touch.

Glamorgan
Moth Recording Group
|
The Glamorgan Moth
Recording Group (GMRG) was formed in 1995 in response to the growing
number of naturalists becoming interested in recording moths in south
Wales. Within five years the group had fifty members and had published
a provisional atlas of the Macro-moths of Glamorgan.
We run a series
of field meetings during the summer, which are generally well attended,
and aim to produce a minimum of nine newsletters during the course of
each year. As a group we have a policy of recording by non-lethal means.
We currently have
a membership of over 80, and we are now working toward a comprehensive
publication of Glamorgan Lepidoptera that we hope to publish in the
next four years. In order to ensure that atlas work is as comprehensive
as possible we have self-imposed the condition that each of the 10km
squares in the vice-county will have records for the 100 most commonly
recorded species. The atlas will provide the first complete Glamorgan
Lepidoptera list to be published for over 50 years and will provide
and up-to-date account of the counties moth species.
If you wish to become
a member or think that you might have records from the vice-county of
Glamorgan (VC41), or if you have any other queries about us, please
contact us.

Gower
Marine Mammals Project
|
The Gower Marine
Mammal Project was founded in April 1999 to support and extend the work
of volunteer cetacean watchers who had been actively logging whale and
dolphin activity in South Wales since the mid 1990's.
Our activities centre
on public education, both formal and informal, including visits to schools/special
interest groups and events such as boat and shore-based wildlife spotting
trips. In addition, we support research, particularly involving volunteer
effort.
The project is particularly
concerned with the status of the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena).
Since November 2002, we have been co-ordinating the South Wales Porpoise
Project, an exciting new initiative to increase our knowledge of this
Biodiversity Action Plan priority species: how many use our coasts,
where and when do they feed, how far do they travel, do they breed here?
Membership is open
and free to all. Anyone who completes a "sightings" form,
participates in an organised activity (boat or shore-based watch) or
asks to be added to the mailing list, becomes a member, should they
wish.
