Role and responsibilities of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor

The Mayor is the First Citizen of Bridgend County Borough and is elected each year at the Annual Meeting of the Council which is held in May. He/she holds the position of Mayor for one year. The Mayor has several specific roles to play during their term of office. These include chairing full meetings of Council and representing the Council and local community at formal and ceremonial occasions in the country borough and elsewhere. The Mayor and Mayoress wear their Chains of Office when they attend functions on behalf of the Council.

The Mayor has a ceremonial role where he acts as an ambassador for the Borough. He represents Bridgend at:

  • Civic ceremonies
  • Royal visits
  • Receptions and functions at the Civic office for special occasions and for visitors to Bridgend
  • Events for charitable/voluntary organisations
  • Events that recognise the achievements of residents of the Borough and Council staff
  • Citizenship Ceremonies for borough residents completing the process of becoming a British Citizen

The Deputy Mayor is elected at the same time as the Mayor. The Deputy Mayor acts as the Mayor’s representative at all events, including chairing Council, if the Mayor is unavailable.
