A Warm Welcome To New County Borough Residents

From April this year, Bridgend County Borough Council will be providing citizenship ceremonies to welcome immigrant residents into the community.

Under new rules, everyone who obtains British citizenship from 1 January 2004 will be required to attend one of these events. They will be asked to swear an oath of allegiance to the Crown and make a pledge to uphold the values and laws of the UK. National symbols and the national anthem will also be central features of the ceremony.

The Government aims to ensure that getting citizenship is not purely a bureaucratic process and is keen for applicants to have the opportunity to celebrate the event rather than just receive their documents through the post.

It hopes that the ceremonies will encourage social interaction and help new citizens join British society. For more information about citizenship ceremonies, contact the Register Office on (01656) 642391 or visit
