Bridgend Covenant Initiatives and Events Crest

There is a significant amount of work being undertaken within Bridgend County Borough to underpin our commitment to Bridgend’s Armed Forces Community Covenant.

Initiatives and events to date include:

  • a number of flag raising ceremonies, homecoming parades and events designed to mark specific occasions such as Armed Forces Day, Armistice Day and Remembrance Day
  • the bestowing of the freedom of the County Borough on both the Royal Welsh and the Welsh Guards.
  • Our housing policy has been amended to prioritise applicants who require adapted accommodation due to injuries sustained while in service, or who need to find somewhere to live as a result of having left the armed forces.
  • the Council Tax Reduction Scheme has been amended so that ward widow pensions are no longer included when calculating a person’s income.
  • raised awareness of a new e-learning course to support GP’s in meeting the healthcare needs of veterans in the County Borough. With approximately 8% of the population being veterans the average GP practice with 2000 patients can expect to have approximately 160 veterans on their list.
  • the School Place Allocation Policy was amended to ensure that veterans were not disadvantaged when returning to the Bridgend area.

Future initiatives and events:

  • a steering group has been set up called BridgeHead to co-ordinate the submission of Community Covenant Grant Scheme bids.
