Kenfig National Nature Reserve
Glamorgan’s largest natural lake, Kenfig Pool, is set on the edge of this beautiful area, with spectacular views from Sker beach across Swansea Bay to the Gower. It is one of the finest Wildlife habitats in Wales and one of the last remnants of a huge dune system that once stretched along the coast of Southern Wales from the River Ogmore to the Gower peninsula. The reserve is home to unique wild orchids, as well as insects and wildlife. Kenfig is one of the most important sites in Britain for nature conservation.
There is an Information Centre, which has a “hands on” exhibition for children of all ages, and shop for leaflets, books and conservation gifts. Stroll along the boardwalk and stop at one of the bird hides overlooking the 70-acre freshwater pool, a favourite refuge for wildfowl at all times of the year. Wardens are often on site to answer any queries you may have.
Interpretation and education feature highly at Kenfig. Talks and slide shows can be arranged, along with guided walks for organised groups. An advisory service is also available for schools.

The land is owned by the Trustees of the Kenfig Corporation Property – successors to the burgesses of the medieval borough – but is leased and managed by Bridgend County Borough Council. Without practical management, the dunes would eventually be overcome by dense grassland and scrub woodland which would mean the loss of much of the important and diverse wildlife of Kenfig.
With the help of volunteers and students, the Reserve is managed so that the delicate balance of habitats is maintained and visitors have the opportunity to see the site without accidentally harming the features that everyone has come to enjoy.
Please note that although there is wheelchair access to the Information Centre, access to the dunes is difficult.
Kenfig National Nature Reserve can be reached from Junction 37 of the M4 Motorway and is signposted from North Cornelly, Pyle and Porthcawl. There are also local buses, which stop outside the Reserve.
