Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000
A Guide for Bridgend SchoolsThe Freedom of Information Act 2000 aims to promote greater openness and accountability across the public sector (including schools) by: n Ensuring the general public has the right of access to all information held by schools. n Requiring all schools to publish information, which you hold proactively through the adoption of "publication schemes", and to publish information in line with the scheme. In brief, a publication scheme: n Is a guide to the types of information schools make available to the public n Commits schools to making the information available n Must be formally adopted by the governing body and recorded in the governing body minutes n Should have been in place by 29 February 2004 (except in the case of maintained nursery schools, which have an extended deadline of 30 June 2004). Bridgend LEA recommends schools adopt one of the two model schemes which have been approved by the Information Commissioner. Otherwise the school must develop a bespoke scheme and have it approved separately. Bridgend LEA recommend nursery, infants, junior, primary, and special schools adopt the model schemes which are contained in this document. If your school adopts the model scheme then you need to insert your individual school details, replace the aims and objectives with your own version (optional) and list any other documents that you make available in Annex A. You cannot delete or add any sections. The Guidance called for schemes to be in place before 29 February 2004. Where this has not been done the governing body needs to adopt the scheme, publish and promote its existence (however you see fit), and then the school must make all the information available on request. |
