About Coychurch Crematorium

The crematorium has been designed to solve the real problems presented by the solemn and moving ceremony of cremation.

No mechanical effects have been allowed to obtrude ; the organs of both chapels are the best manual organs for their purpose ; and the ceremonial path has been extended by a cloister that provides an unhurried approach to the main chapel, with a canopy large enough for the decent removal of the coffin and the assembly of the procession in all kinds of weather.

Coychurch Crematorium

It is hoped that the total setting will prove sympathetic both for the ceremony and for the feelings of mourners taking part in it, and that with its memorials it will take its place in the region with the parish churches and other monuments of our historic past.

It is situated in a beautiful area of land entered from the Coity - Coychurch road to the East of Bridgend, the cremation buildings lying on the dividing line between open ground and woodland extending into a valley beyond.

The group of buildings consists first of a main Christian chapel named  Capel Crallo and entered under a wide canopy and through an extended cloister, with a covered dispersal area or wreath cloister, enabling mourners to rejoin their cars without retracing their steps ; and a secondary and non - denominational chapel named Capel Coity and separately approached.

A Chapel of Remembrance lies a little apart from the main group in order that it may be visited without interrupting services in progress.

Great care has been taken in the choice of building materials which are everywhere of a nature that will improve with time, the stone being taken from old demolished buildings in the area so that the crematorium may take its place in the continuous story of the region.

The service

At the Crematorium, the content of a service is left to your own personal preference.
Service books are available with-in the Crematorium but you are free to provide your own service leaflets.

A commital can be held in the crematorium following a service elsewhere or a full service can be arranged.

The Crematorium provides for 30 minute service and provides an organ and tape/CD facilities. Extra time is available on request at a small charge.

At the end of the service in the main chapel the coffin may be lowered or left in position - at the discretion of mourners, who in both chapels leave by a side door leading to a dispersal and wreath cloister, and to adjoining car parks.

The Chapel of Remembrance is also open at these times so that entries for the day may be seen in the Book of Remembrance.

Entrance Canopy

A wide canopy that extends to the waters of the lake receives the funeral cortège under ample cover and allows for its re-assembly on foot within the confines of the crematorium building.

A waiting room for mourners coming separately to the ceremony is at the rear of the canopy with a window commanding a view of the approach road.

Cloister Approach

The cloister approach is both an essential part of the ceremony and a setting for commemoration in the form of tablets fixed to the walls of the stone semi-circular niches; of specially inscribed glass panes forming part of the design of the large window area on the left upon entering; of separate lancet windows inserted between the stone niches.

Capel Crallo

The main chapel of rounded forms is the greatest simplicity with plastered walls and wood ceiling and floor, with the catafalque in black slate.

The catafalque stands in a wide semi-circular niche lit from above, and adjoining it is the lectern of the officiating clergyman, the choir stalls and an exceptional pipe organ.

Low windows light the congregation, and a large ladder window marks the line of the ceremonial approach.

The chapel can seat 140 mourners.

Capel Crallo

Dispersal Cloister

The dispersal cloister and wreath cloister is covered by a canopy to permit the placing of flowers.

Lavatories for both sexes, a flower room, and a rest room for bearers open off this cloister.

It is built in contrasting patterns of brickwork and a wide flight of steps leading to one of the cars parks and to an additional grass area for the placing of flowers.

Capel Coity

The secondary and undenominational chapel is situated on a separate line of vehicular approach and on a slightly lower level than the main chapel and is connected to the Garden of Remembrance by stone steps and to its nearby car park by direct pathway.

It is built of stone and wood, sheathed both externally and internally with cedar wood and has a floor of patterned brick.

Capel Coity

There is direct access to the Transfer Room of the crematorium, for those who desire it, from the Main Chapel or from the Vestry of the Secondary Chapel.

The Chapel of Remembrance

The stone built circular chapel is situated at the end of a tree lined path from the entrance to the main chapel, and can be approached by car without disturbing entering funeral cortèges and has a small lay-by.

It houses the Book of Remembrance, which is specially designed for the Crematorium in sheepskin vellum with a double page for each day of the year.

The book is in three volumes, one for each third of the year, so that entries can be made with little delay.

Four very beautiful stained glass windows, by Mr Timothy Lewis and members of the Swansea College of Art, commemorate the four seasons of the year.

The Chapel of Remembrance

The Grounds

The grounds extend to an area of some 29 acres of which 15 acres are woodland. Advantage has been taken of the contours and the placing of the crematorium buildings to design roads giving separate approaches to each chapel with no fear of overlapping, and a separate exit some way from and out of sight of the entrance.

In general a parkland atmosphere has been secured, with the planting of many types of different species, and the woodland cared for.

The Cremators

Two modern cremators have been installed and there is provision for a third at a later date. All cremations are carried out with care and reverence. Each coffin is separately placed in a cremator exactly as it is received and is not disturbed in any way until the process of cremation is complete when the ashes are then withdrawn and placed in an urn ready for removal, burial or dispersal in the Garden of Remembrance.

How to arrange a cremation

When a cremation is required a Funeral Director should be instructed to make the necessary arrangements.

He will give the appropriate notice to the crematorium authority of the day and time proposed and obtain the necessary forms for completion.

Further details, forms and information are available from ;

The Superintendent and Registrar
Coychurch Crematorium,
Coychurch,
Bridgend,
Glamorgan.

Telephone ; 01656 656605

Arrangements for various forms of commemoration may be made with the Superintendent.

There are various ways in which cremated remains may be laid to rest, and several different types of memorialisation.

A Final Resting Place

Death provokes many emotions and when the funeral is over there is a further need; the right choice of a final resting-place for the cremated remains. You must consider your options now to make an informed decision regarding your loved-one which fulfils your family needs. There are various ways in which cremated remains may be laid to rest:

To scatter:

The Garden of Remembrance was opened in the summer of 1998 and consists of beautifully landscaped areas of cultivated lawns, plants, flowers, shrubs and trees, which provide tranquil locations with pathways and seats where you can rest awhile with your treasured memories.

The Garden is cared-for as a permanent memorial to all those who have been scattered there.

Cremated remains are scattered loosely over the surface of the individual lawns, following the third week after the cremation service.

There are four lawns, each one individually named, and a record is kept of the particular lawn chosen for the cremated remains of any named deceased.

A family may make arrangements to witness the scattering of the remains of a loved-one, enabling them to choose the location within any lawn and the advantage, therefore, of being able to visit the exact site in the future.

A family may ask for remains to be scattered in any lawn of their choosing even if they do not witness the scattering.

This is of particular benefit when a family wish to link members to the same lawn.

A central courtyard provides the focal point for the lawns of the Garden of Remembrance and incorporates memorialisation for those scattered.

It should be noted that the placing of floral tributes is not permitted on the lawns.
However, provision has been made on some memorials for flower holders, and flowers may be placed in the Chapel of Remembrance.

To inter in a burial plot

An extension to the burial plot area was opened in the summer of 1998 in the form of a Memorial Shrub Garden.

It is a beautifully landscaped area where burial plots are interspersed with shrub beds and trees.

The burial plots are set against memorial plinths onto which may be attached Welsh slate memorial plaques.

A flower vase is provided within the memorial plinth and the plots can accept up to four sets of cremated remains in bronze urns and up to four plaques.

This gives a family the option of re-opening an existing family-owned plot a subsequent three times following the initial interment.

It should be noted that the placing of flowers is restricted to the flower pot within the memorial plinth, and that tributes are strictly prohibited from the ground adjacent to the memorial.

To Place within a Sanctum Columbarium Niche:

Situated within the Central Courtyard of the Garden of Remembrance are the Crematorium's Sanctum Columbaria.

There are two different styles available:

Sanctum I, a large above-ground vault in which remains rest side-by-side, or
Sanctum II, a spacious below-ground vault where remains rest in vertically separated chambers.

The Vaults are constructed using Cotswold-coloured cast stone and have a sloping face which incorporates a granite tablet.

A flower vase is provided above the tablet, enabling families to place a floral tribute at each visit.

The Sanctum Columbaria offer a fitting and dignified resting place for cremated remains and each can accommodate two bronzed urns.

To re-open an existing family-owned rose bush

The Memorial Rose Garden released its last available rose in the summer of 1998 and is now limited to the re-opening of existing family-owned roses.

Each rose bush accepts the placement of four urns of cremated remains at the foot of the rose.

To remove from the Crematorium:

You may wish to collect the cremated remains of a loved one and take them elsewhere.
Some individuals wish to be returned to their birthplace or wish to be scattered at a favourite beauty spot, or buried at a local cemetery.

You must obtain permission from the land-owner in the above cases.

Memorialisation for the Garden of Remembrance

There are several different types of memorialisation:

Memorial Courtyard

A Memorial Courtyard provides the central feature of the Garden of Remembrance and incorporates memorialisation for loved-ones scattered in the surrounding lawns.
The adjacent decorative pathway and quiet seating areas within the courtyard provide a tranquil setting for assorted memorial styles, and a focal point for the adjacent lawns of the Garden of Remembrance.
The Courtyard offers two styles of memorialisation:

(i) Wall Tablets.

The wall tablets are situated along the decorative walkway leading to the courtyard and also in the courtyard itself.
You are invited to purchase a granite plaque to be inscribed with the names of your loved-ones.
The granite plaque is installed to the memorial wall which resembles Yorkstone in colour and texture.
The wall space is purchased for a period of fifteen years and can be extended in periods of fifteen years.
Should the family not wish to renew the adoption period they may re-claim their tablet.

(ii) Vase Blocks.

The classical style Yorkstone vase blocks surround the central courtyard.
Granite plaques are placed in the individual recess of each vase block and can be personalised with an inscription and design significant to those bereaved.
A posy vase is provided above each plaque enabling families to place a small floral tribute at each visit.
The vase block is purchased for a period of fifteen years and can be extended in periods of fifteen years.
Should the family not wish to renew the lease period they may re-claim their tablet.

Memorialisation for the Sanctum Columbaria,

Also within the Central Courtyard of the Garden of Remembrance are the Sanctum Columbaria:

Sanctum I

The vault face of this above-ground columbarium niche incorporates a generous granite tablet.
You must visit your local monumental mason to discuss your requirements for a highly personalised inscription and design of your choice.
If a second urn is to be placed in the niche, you may wish to leave room on your plaque for an additional inscription at that time.

Sanctum II

The lid of this below-ground vault incorporates the granite tablet.
You must discuss your requirements for a personalised inscription and design with staff at the Crematorium.
If a second urn is to be placed in the vault, arrangements must be made for a new tablet to replace the existing one in order to accommodate your amended inscription.

Memorialisation for the Burial Plots

The burial plots are set against memorial plinths onto which may be attached Welsh slate memorial plaques provided by the Crematorium. Each burial plot accepts up to four plaques which may be inscribed with the names of your loved-ones.

Additional Memorialisation - Natural Memorials

Tree Dedication

A number of trees are available within the Crematorium grounds which can be dedicated "In Memoriam".
These are located within the Garden of Remembrance and the Memorial Shrub Garden.
The trees have been planted in natural surroundings and are already established.
You are invited to purchase a Welsh slate plaque to be inscribed with the names of your loved ones, which will be placed alongside your particular tree.
The Memorial Tree location is purchased for a period of fifteen years and can be extended in periods of fifteen years.
Should the family not wish to renew the adoption period they may reclaim their tablet.

Shrub Dedication

The shrub memorials are located in the Memorial Shrub Garden, a beautifully landscaped area of planted shrub beds which are interspersed with memorial trees, and the new burial plots.
You are invited to purchase a Welsh slate plaque to be inscribed with the names of your loved ones, which will be placed within a particular shrub bed.
An individual shrub is not purchased along with the slate plaque; the shrubs in each bed are shared with all those who have purchased the right to have a plaque and for the enhancement of the Gardens as a whole.
The memorial shrub location is purchased for a period of fifteen years and can be extended in periods of fifteen years.
Should the family not wish to renew the adoption period they may reclaim their tablet.
The "Natural Memorial" has been made available for all those who love the natural beauty of trees and plants as a memorial to a loved-one.

Wall Spaces for Large Granite Plaques

Large granite wall plaque memorials enhance the external chapel walls. The wall spaces are purchased from the Crematorium and provided eternally.
You should visit a local monumental mason on the Crematorium's approved list in order to purchase a granite plaque complete with your personalised inscription and design.

Memorial Garden Seat

Coychurch Crematorium welcomes the placing of memorial seats within the landscaped gardens.
The seats are positioned at particular locations at the discretion of the Superintendent & Registrar, providing areas where you can rest awhile with your treasured memories.
You are invited to purchase a Welsh slate plaque, to be inscribed with the names of your loved-ones, which will be attached to the seat.
The bench comes with a ten-year maintenance agreement and should it require attention after this period you may pay the Crematorium to refurbish it at the set fee then ruling.

Service Book Dedication

Families are invited to dedicate a Service Book in memory of their loved-one.
The Service Book is placed in the main crematorium chapel and details of the dedication are displayed on the inside cover.

The Book of Remembrance

The Book of Remembrance, displayed in a purpose-built cabinet in the Chapel of Remembrance, perpetuates the memory of those cremated at Coychurch Crematorium.

There is a volume for every four months of the year and these are fine examples of the bookbinder's art. They are bound in calf vellum, richly tooled in gold and emblazoned with the Crematorium crest.

An opening is provided for each day of the year and the volume will remain open each day at the appropriate page so that entries may be seen on each anniversary of the death.
You may also arrange with the Crematorium Office for the pages of the book to be turned to an appropriate page. Each entry is an example of calligraphic excellence, worthy of the quality and importance of the volume and a fitting tribute to the memory of the deceased.

The inscriptions are executed by hand by craftsmen and offer the same degree of artistic excellence as the best examples of medieval illuminated manuscripts.
Inscriptions may consist of two, five or eight lines, and a badge, flower or personalised emblem may be included with a five or eight line entry.
Miniature Books of Remembrance are also available.

The books are an exact reproduction of the books at the crematorium and are intended as personal family records and may contain more than one inscription if required.
