Bridgend Biodiversity Partnership  - A local biodiversity action plan for Bridgend

“A healthy environment is important to everyone; it is essential for our well being and our quality of life”. So says the Bridgend Biodiversity Partnership!”

And at the United Nations ‘Earth Summit’ held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, 153 world leaders, including the UK, agreed. They signed the “Convention on Biological Diversity”, a commitment to conserving and sustaining biological diversity. “Biodiversity: The UK Action Plan” reiterates the Government’s pledge not only to conserve, but also to enhance biodiversity. The need for this commitment is unquestionable: the Countryside Survey, the Government’s own monitoring project, has revealed many examples of loss of habitats and species diversity in the British countryside since the 1980s.

The Biodiversity Action Plan for Bridgend aims to harness the enthusiasm and commitment of local people to help Government achieve its targets for biodiversity. However, conserving biodiversity is not just about rare and threatened species and habitats. All wildlife lives in a delicately balanced environment, which is easily upset by the loss of species or habitats. The Plan therefore also focuses on local conservation priorities and targets, and was approved by BCBC's Cabinet as Supplementary Planning Guidance to run alongside and inform the Bridgend Unitary Development Plan, on 5th June 2002. We would still welcome any comments that you would wish to make. For example, do you agree with what the Plan says, and can you help to implement its proposals?
