Proposal to Amalgamate Ogmore School and Ynysawdre Comprehensive School
Introduction
This consultation is to invite your views on a proposal to amalgamate Ogmore School and Ynysawdre Comprehensive School.
We propose to close both Ogmore School and Ynysawdre Comprehensive School and establish a new 11-18 school. If agreed, the new school would operate from September 2010.

What the proposal means in practice:-
• At the moment, the two schools operate on separate sites with two sets of staff, two separate budgets and two governing bodies.
• The new school would initially operate on two sites. The new school at Tondu would eventually serve the Valleys’ Gateway area and provide secondary education for the traditional school catchment areas of Ogmore School and Ynysawdre Comprehensive School.
• There would be a new governing body whose membership would reflect the nature and catchment of the school. This governing body would have to set out a new staffing structure for the school.
• Initially, the existing school buildings at Ogmore School and Ynysawdre would be used to accommodate pupils, possibly with minor adaptations.

How do you make your views known?
Those being consulted are the parents, carers, governors and staff of both Ogmore School and Ynysawdre Comprehensive School as well as associate schools and interested parties.
We would like your view as to whether or not you support the amalgamation of Ogmore School and Ynysawdre Comprehensive School. Consultation meetings will be held and you are welcome to attend the appropriate meeting:-

All views must be received by no later than Tuesday 4 November 2008.
What are the Next Steps?
The consultation period will be completed in early November and results will be reports to a Cabinet meeting thereafter.
If the Cabinet decide not to proceed, that will be the end of this proposal for the foreseeable future.
If Cabinet decide to go ahead, there would be a second statutory procedure to follow to open School in September 2010. A public notice outlining the proposals would need to be published for a two-month period and any formal written objections would be invited during this time. If there are objections, the Welsh Assembly Government will need to consider the proposal. The Assembly could then accept, reject or modify the proposal.
